Embracing Change: The Journey of Selling My Home

Deciding to sell my home was not just a practical decision—it was a transformative one, necessitating both extensive physical renovations and a profound emotional readiness to let go. This journey of transformation actually began eight years ago due to an unexpected leak under the kitchen sink. The discovery that the tiles were laid on paper led to an extensive insurance-funded overhaul, which replaced all the tiles, cabinets, and countertops.

Reinventing Spaces

During this transformation, driven by necessity and a spark of creativity, I tackled the underutilized “formal living room” and “formal dining room” combination by erecting a wall that transformed these spaces into areas we could genuinely enjoy. Alongside my friends Dennis and Jasmine, I built and installed sleek Ikea kitchen cabinets, which redefined the heart of our home with a modern touch, infusing new energy into our everyday lives. So obviously, all these renovations and items that I personally constructed made the selling of the home an emotional one.

The Master Bath Overhaul

A significant challenge in preparing the house for sale was the untouched master bathroom, still adorned with its original, peeling wallpaper. It required not just an update but a complete reimagining. Jeff, a remarkable contractor, assisted in navigating numerous design choices. I opted to remove the outdated tub, which we discovered had a slight crack. Secretly, I was thrilled the tub had a crack because I had always wanted to get rid of it and have a huge shower. So, by default, we replaced it with a spacious, angled shower adapted to the quirky layout—a necessity for anyone who knows my taste for uniqueness!

Tending to Final Details

Preparing the interior was a meticulous process—updating old light fixtures, fans, and paint, and finally installing those baseboards we had neglected 8 years ago. My attention then shifted to the exterior. The pool required repairs, the outdoor kitchen that I had designed and personally built myself during Covid still had unfinished parts, and essential landscaping in both the front and backyards were critical to ensure the house appeared inviting and well-cared-for, ready to charm potential buyers.

Choosing Support Over Solo Efforts

With over 12 years as a Realtor, I was confident in my ability to handle the sale myself. However, I understood the invaluable nature of professional guidance. After 18 years of memories within these walls, my emotions were deeply intertwined with the home. It was not just a property to sell; it was my home. I needed more than just a Realtor; I needed a partner. Michelle was that person—providing expertise, emotional support, and occasionally the hard truths I needed to face.

The Downsizing Marathon

Preparing the house for sale also meant downsizing—deciding what to keep, donate, or discard. Initially, I was ready to part with almost everything. Thanks to the Buy Nothing group, people were eager to take my “crap,” or rather, “precious items.” But as deadlines approached and the house needed clearing for painting, the task of packing everything became urgent. Surprisingly, I found it difficult to find takers for items like a twin bed, leading to renting a U-Haul trailer to move things to storage and to the thrift store. It was a poignant farewell to 18 years of accumulated life.

Setting Off to New Adventures

Why the rush? I had booked a three-week trip to Europe to spend time with my oldest son, who was teaching English in Spain for his gap year. “Let’s get all this sorted, and by the way, I’m leaving the country for three weeks for the first time ever,” I told Jeff and Michelle. Miraculously, we were almost ready to hit the market the day I departed, and just over a week later, we were not only listed but also under contract to close in early January. A heartfelt thanks to Jeff & Michelle! Stay tuned for more on that adventure…
